The Budget ,debate was -continued in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, and was still unfinished when the House rose at 5.30 p.m. till Tuesday afternoon. Tribute ijvajs_ paid by the Hon. Sir Apirana 'Ngata to Lord B'ledusloe’g gift of the Waitangi site. H© said that the Ngapuhis had expressed a desire to erect a suitable Maori memorial on the spot. H© had explained to them that there was no money but had pointed out/that there were eight years befor© the centenary of the signing of the treaty. H e had submitte.l a -suggestion that they should contribute .5/. p© r year For each cow milked, and this had been taken up-. There were a thousand cows being milked by the Ngapuhis and in eight years they would have £2OOO with which a memorial in the form of • a carved meeting house could be erected.
He suggested that Mr Tirikatine ■should -endeavour to obtain the cooperation of the Ratana party in this project, and if this were forthcoming it would be certain that a memorial could be erected worthy of the RiR of His Excellency.
