HON. MACMILLAN
CRITICISED BY INDEPENDENT. WELLINGTON, Oct. 26.
“We have a Minister for. Agriculture in this country and that gentleman, although one of the heaviest- weights in tin: mouse, can he termed the lightest side-stepper in the country.” said Mr C. A, Wilkinson (l.nd., Egmont), during an attack on the sliding scale of wheat dutie s in the House to-night. Li Hamilton, he continued, the Minister made a statement , that was •against wheat- duties, and that statement was published far and wide throughout New Zealand. Air J. A. Naah (0., Palmerston): 1 do not think lie backs that up.
Mr Wilkinson: He did (not back it up when he got to Tiinnru. When he reached. Timaru and, later, Christchurch, he found that lie had made >. big mistake. The. hon. gentleman abjectly recanted at.Tiinnru in sackcloth and ashes the statement he is reported to have made in Hamilton, and 1 want to know what kind of Minister we have here. 1 have had quite a lot of trouble with previous Ministers for Agriculture, two of, them in particular; The same fate - , will befall the hon. gentleman in this ease if he goes on with the game as at present. It is a marvellous thing that the wheatgrower in the South Island can command the situation. A member: And still the public suffer. .. • Mr. Wilkinson And will continue to suffer.,, unyl, ,.y-§ get a.fnew Minister ..for Agriculture;.. ■ ■ • •
