GREY JOCKEY CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of the Grey Jockey Club held ,%t Greymouth yesterday afternoon,’ the annual .report and balance sheep were adopted. The /latter .showed a. .(credit balance of £67 19s, but the "loss fof the year wa=» £467. It was not proposed to replace the main grand stand burnt down, at prerent. . . The President said that the position was that- the Club was Out of debt, but they had made a loss last year of £467, and the question of whether they could carry on was really ’in the lap of the gods. If a loss was made th's year it would mean winding up, ume's the Government gave some relief from the burdensome taxation; The Club had carried on for years through the efforts of a few men who had guaranteed the account at the bank. It was not fair that' twelve men should have to provide the enormous amount of State revenue that the'C’ub had paid. The position at present was. that they had the outside stand and they could ca’wy on if tm* Government would, allow them, if not they would have to consider closing down. The Treasurer, Mr C. L. Kettle, said that although the position shown bv the balance sheet was bad enoug i all their debentures and loans had .been practically paid off.' They were reducing the stakes % £IOO for Christ-, mas ana they could go further into the question of reducing expenses after Christmas.. I«f •evei-yone worked he thought they could <*»nie through al-

right. ' - . The election of officers resulted in the re-election of MF T.' E>. Coates as President, a imbar■Vcomptimeat being paid last year’s committee. Acknowledging a. vote of thanks to the officials, the Secretary, Mr M. J‘.Fogarty, said that he regretted the balance ’ sheet was not better. One of their troubles was to collect money owing' to them by “battling” owners who paid their fees if they got a w.m, and if they did not win the club never got it. He thought that ' the Club should go into this .matter . and lay down a firm rule.
