Strong Director of Education, speaking in Christchurch this week. “I do hope,” he added, “that we have got past the stage when we are Satisfied with examination results. Improvements in the services of expresses and other trains in the South Island are being made by the Railway Board. From December 7 next the Christclnirch-Invercargill 8.35 a.m. express will run every day except Monday, instead of three da,ys a week as at present. The existing Sunday night expresses will be continued, Thus for inter-inland traffic the new arrangement,' provides for a daily through express train connection in both directions. Other reorganisations in the train running on other lines is to be made.
According to the annual r cport of the Marine Department, the bunkering tr.de at Westp rt has fallen away very considerably. The number of vesels calling at the port to replenish their Coal bunkers during the past seven years was as follows: —20, 44, 51, 54, 57, 24, 10. In the past, continuejs the ‘Fport, tramp steamers calling at Westport for bunker coal were frequently subjected to considerable delay owing to sufficient coal not being available when it was required, and this combined with the fact that the present rate of exchange is favourable to the purchase of Australian coal, has caused a loss of trade which will be difficut to regain.
At a meeting of' the committee oi the West Coast Rugby Union, it was decided, after a lengthy discussion, that the following recommendations be made to the donor of the trophy for competition between toe winners of the, Westland and Greymouth senior competitions : That matches be played on the ground of the holders; that the Union or Sub-Union, on whose ground the game takes place, receive the total receipts, less bare transport expenses of visiting team from centre to centre, i.e.. Greymouth to Hokitika, or vice versa. The Wellington Union wrote thanking the. Coast Union and particularly 'Messrs 'Adams, Kyle, Bruce and Dowell wnd Devaney, of Hokitika, also Dr Bay, for hospitality and services rendered the Wellington touring team.

A baby was born in a fourteen-year-old motor-car last Friday while the mother was being taken into Opotiki from the back-blocks. In view of the unique circumstances surrounding its birth, the baby’s names will include those of the maker of the car.
The death occurred at the Old People’s Home, Greymouth on Tuesday, of Mr Thomas Wilson, at the age of 76 years. Deceased was a native of England, and for over 30 years was engaged in gold-mining in the Blackball district. He had no relatives in New Zealand.

Dr. Bell, who has been medical officer for the South Westland Medical Association at Matainui for some four years, and whose appointment terminates with the Westland Hospital Board in the middle of November, as a result of the failure of the Medica'J Association to pay in their moneys to the Board’s funds towards the payment of the 'doctor’s salary, has received an appointment as resident assistant medical officer a,t the Grey River Hospital.
A- debate between the All Saints’ and St. Mary’s Clubs was held in the latter’s rooms last evening. The subject was “That the railway should be extended to South Westland.” St. Mary’s, who took the negative, won by the small margin of one point. Individual points were as follow: —St. Mary’s.—C. There was a decrease of three oases of infectious ■ and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury Health District for the week ended noon on Monday, as' compared with the previous week, and an increase of one case in the West Coast Health District. In Canterbury the cases were: Scarlet fever 6, tuberculosis 6, puerperal fever (not ordinary) 1. There was one case of .tuberculosis reported from the West Coast district. Deaths reported were: Canterbury: Tuberculosis 1, puerperal sepsis 1. West Coast: Puerperal fever (not., ordinary) 1.
