POLICE ATTACKED

BY UNEMPLOYED SYDNEY QUESTIONNAIRE PROTEST (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, October 2-5, While the unemployed were congregating outside of the Gflebe Town Hall for a meeting of protest against the new dole form questionnaire, three ■ members of the/ police force were viciously attacked by a crowd of two ■hundred,, the police being trampled upon and kickhd. «■ Two, who a a sergeants, were so injured that they had to receiv< hospital treatment. The third, a constable, was badly mauled, but he got on his feet, and drew his revolver, which quietened his attackers, who withdrew when police reinforcements arrived. The crowd dispersed rapidly. Remarks by some of those present indicated the disturbance was organised, as new arrivals were questioned whether simultaneous trouble had occurred at other points about the city and coalfields.

QUESTIONNAIRE DEMONSTRATION —i SYDNEY,, October 26. Mass demonstrations of coalminers against the dole questionnaire were held to-day. At Cessnocb a procession of nearly a thousand headed by women carrying banners, marched through Cessnock to Kurri Kurri, halted at the courthouse, voiced their protests and gave the Government four hours within which to withdraw the questionnaire. Failing satisfaction they threatened to help themselves to food and provisions. A large hatch of police were sent from: Sydney and Newcastle to preserve law and order. MINERS ARE URGED TO STRIKE. BUT LEADERS ADVOCATE WORK. (Received this day at 9.2-5 a.m) SYDNEY, October 26. Despite the unemployed untimatum that, unless the dole questionnaire were withdrawn, men would “take the dole,” the State Government announced that it insists upon the use of the questionnaire. A big unemployed meeting, at Gessnock last night urged the : miners to strike, but the miners’ leaders, while in sympathy 7 with the fight against the questionnaire, pleaded with the mqn to keep the mines working. One hundred and fifty'police have been drafted to Oessliock. ,
