He was called to the B.’or in 1897, but in the same year Ire joined the “Punch” staff. Shortly afterwards he was appointed assistant editor. In 1996 he succeeded Sir F, C. Burn.-nd as editor. His books- inch’tie “Horace at Cambridge,” “Tillers of the Sand,” “Tn Cap ancl Bells,” “A Harvest cf Chaff,” “W'-’r Time,” “Made in England,” and “From the Home Front.” These are la.gelv reprints of some of his many contr’butions to "Piinoh.” H© was knighted in 191-4, and among the distinctions conferred on him were the lion, degrees of T.-L.D of Edinburgh and D Litt. of Durham.
