Fire completely destroyed a fiveroomed bungalow at Boa at about 1.30 o’clock, yesterday morning. The house was owned by Mr J. Dando, but was unoccupied at the time. Mr W. Wiard, of Greymouth, lost all his furniture, which was stored in the house, There was an insurance of £259 on the house in the Royal Exchange office.

The discoverey of three forged winning dividend tickets in the totalisator at Alexander Park after the Epsom Trotting Meeting in August led to extra vigilance - being exercised by the pay-out clerks at subsequent meetings, with a result that 'a fourth ticket deemed to be a forgery was detected by one of the clerks during the second day of the Avondale Race Meeting on Monday. All four tickets are particularly ingenious imitations, the only difference between them and the actual tickets issued being a minute difference in the signature endorsed on them.
When a cas e of shoes was nnened at the Hamilton branch of Ilallenstein Bros., Limited, it was found that a quantity of the goods had been stolen. Mr Fred W. Furkert whose retirement irom the position of Engineer in-Chief and Under Secretary of the Public Works Department was announced yesterday by the Public Service Commissioner, is a native of Ross and was educated at the llcss State and Hokitika. District High Schools. He is. 58 years of age and lias been in the Public Service for 381 years. His services will be retained in an advisory capacity.
William Georeg Muir again appeared on remand at the Greymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with the attempted murder of Athol Crowe Potter, at Ross, on September Bth, and was remanded, until Tues_ dry next, It is expected that it will be some weeks yet before the Court will inquire intj the case.
The Westport “News 1 ' says—The official, opening tof Westport. Bowling Chib will take place on Monday (Labour Day). Tift unofficial opening has already taken place; indeed, it is hard to get some of the old hands off the green. The Hon. Sidey’s sum-irer-time-saving has only one fault, in their opinion : “It shifts the clock forward only half an hour, instead of an hour or two.” The howling green is a fine place in which to take business worries and lose them.

The Medical Superintendent of the Grey River Hospital (Dr J. F. C. On the arrival of the ferry steamer Maori at Lyttelton on Wednesday morning the police were informed by the purser of the ship that on© of the passenger?, a man of eighty-five, who was on his way to Pembroke, required police protection as he carried £375 in Bank of England notes. The old man was not strong and the purser thought it advisable to inform the police of the circumstances. On being taken to the sta .ion the man produced an old handkerchief containing the money. He told the police that he had just arrived from England by the Tainui and was on his way south. Under an escort he went to Christchurch with instructions to deposit the money in the bank for transfer to a town in Otago. After this had been done he was sent on liis way south.
