GREY HARBOR BOARD
KAPONGA WRECK. At a meeting of the Grey Harbour Board on Tuesday evening the Assistt-ant-secreary, Marine Department, wrote with reference to the sounding of- the b;.r, and signalling, as follows: Ref aring. to the recent; Magisterial inquiry into the loss of the s.s. Ivaponga at your port on May 27 last, the Department would be glad if your Board will- consider the ,-undermentioned points which arose out of the formal investigation, <and. also state what action , the Board proposes to take in .onnection therewith:— (1) That, in the opinion of ti e Cohrt, the area sounded to ascertain, the depth on the bar, is far from sufficient for safe navigation. ■ . (2) That there is need for a more complete method ,of signalling, where-by-a signal made from a vessel touching the bar, is acknowledged in such a manner that the information is conveyed visually to shipping at the wharf. (3) That it appears to be necessary to alter, the whit e leads,, so that the front beacon and light, cannoit be obsccured by. shipping at the wharf. The letter was received, the Chairman stating that .is was not a .matter for qomment in the meantime. The Alines . Department., forward notice of claim for £llß 16s 3d for '•oal lost in the wreck of the Kaponga, The Chairman stated that the matter had l>een referred to the solicitor a n d Was (being attended to.
