SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS
EXPLANATION BY MINISTER. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) WELLINGTON, October 19. What one • member described as a monopolistic contract, which is being opposed throughout the country, had very brief consideration at to-day’s meeting of the Wellington Education Board. It was the school books ; contract, to which he referred, and a letter from the Minister of Education on the subject was received without discussion.
The letter stated: “Whilst, in normal times, I would be prepared to consider the suggestion that the Government should own the copyright and call public tenders for the printing of tfie books, it is felt that it would be placing an unfair burden upon the parents to force them to purchase an entirely fresh set of books at the beginning of the school year, 1934. The expense involved would have been about £40,000. In addition, the Minister said the Government would have to have expended a considerable sum in the preparation of new manuscript, etc.
The point I would stress, he says, “is that, without forcing the parents to expend some £40,000 on new hooks, and without involving the Government in any outlay for fresh manuscript, I have practically achieved what has been asked for. .It is difficult, therefore, to appreciate the criticism that has been levelled against the extension.
