The c-attle resting reserve of 128 acies, at Harihari, was put up for public -ruction at Harihari last week., The rental for this reserve for the past too years has been irom live to se\ en, pounds per year for a lease of seven years, but the sale last week met with a little competition, with the result that the block was knocked down to Mr J. Adamson at th e rate of £2O per year, with a lease of -another seven years. Mr- Adamson was the previous lessee of the area.
The death of Mr Michael Shaffrey took place yesterday at ICumara after an illness extending over a considerable time. The deceased was a native of Hokitika being the old:at son of the lftte Mr and ill's Sh-affroy, former well-known residents of North Revell Street, and was 57 years of age. Deceased took up a section of the lnchbcnnip estate when it w as sub-divided years ago and had proved a successful farmer. Deceased leaves -a, widow (a member of the Corbett family of Kumara), a. family of two sous and three daughters, and three sisters (Mrs C. Pfalihrt of Kanieri, Mrs E. Harrop and Mrs Halford of the North Island). The funeral takes place to-morrow morning to Hokitika cemetery.
An inquest touching tile death of tile late Joan Robert Meagher was held at the Dobson Hall yesterday, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., Coroner, who returned the following verdict“ That the deceased, John Robert Meagher, came to his death in the Grey Hospital on October 18th,. 1932 fom haemorrhage and shock, resulting from a lacerated kidney caused by a fall of stone in the Dobson Mine, on the morning of October 18th. Deceased at the tune, was working in a dangerous place, but was -an experienced miner, and was preparing th e roof to put in timber just before the fall, The working place had been inspected by the deputy shortly before the fall took place,”
The usual monthly meeting of the Arahura branch of Women’s Institute was held week at the residence of Mrs Ditely, Present were the president and eleven members, The minutes of the previous meeting were read -and confirmed, and the usual discussions took place. The count of the aggregate number of points of articles made by members for last year resulted in Mrs Havill being the succe'sful contestant. A competition on articles made from two skeins of wool was in Iso won by the sam e lady. A competition “Letters of the alphabet" was won by Mesdames Houston and Harcour t (tie). It was resolved that each member make a soft toy for competition at next meeting and the roll call to h e 'My Shadow.” Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdnmes Havill, Houston (2) an f ' Miss Houston who served a very dainty repast, The latest in r air matting, oval mats, hearth rugs, curtains and cretonne to hand at Schroder and Co. —Advt.
