GOLF
BALL MESHINGS,. ’ Few golfers realise what extra distance is gained by the mesh or recess markings on the -modern golf ball. In a recent test held in England, players were surprised to find that an ordinary golf; ball with, a perfectly smooth surface, won Id carry only about ninety yards from a perfect shot. A driving machine which hit a mesh-marked ball 28-5 yards with a carry of 24G yards, could get a carry of only 115 yards with a smooth-surface hall. The development of the mesh markings crime about through accident. Tn the early
1880’,s there wore no markings, tint players, to tlieir great surprise, dis- | covered that after the ball had lu>en j dented by iron clubs, greater distance I could he got with it. Tt was no uncommon sight m those days to see golfers hammering new balls to make the surface uneven, until monufacturers came to their rescue by providing the necessary indentations.
