ELECTORAL LAWS

UNJUST TO MAORIS. WELLINGTON, October 12 On the grounds that the present system of election was unjust, Air Tirikatene (Southern Maori) in an urgent question to the Prime Minister in the House this afternoon, asked whether immediate steps would be taken to amend the electoral law s with the object of placing the Alaori people on the same electoral footing as tile pakolia so as to enable the election of Maori members to Parliament on the same basis of secrecy as all other members.

Air Tirikatene said that the present system of election was unjust to the Native race in that the present system offered no secrecy and rendered the present methods "of Maori elections extremely farcical. The Prime Minister replied, saying that the matter would receive consideration.
