SWEEP WINNER
BIG WINDFALL FOR AUCKLAND. £lojooo PRIZE TO BE DIVIDED. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, October 13. There Was jubilation in a mountain home at 3;.40 o’clock this morning, when Mr 'J. W. B. Gornes was told by telephone that Sandwich had run third in the Cesanewitch. Mr Cbrnes, is aged 30, and he and his father are in partnership as grocers, and jointly held the ticket in the Irish sweepstake. When they learned that Francis Richie, aged fifteen, who lives only a . few (doors away, had also drawn a horse, they came to an agreement with him under which, if either Sandwich or Bonny Bright Eyes (Richie’s horse), gained a place, the owner of ; the winning ticket would -pay the others £SOOO for first, £2-500 for second, and £ISOO for third. So Master Ritchie, besides the £IOO which he received for drawing Bonny Bright Eyes, will get £ISOO out of Mr Cornes’ prize of £IO,OOO. The Cornes families, senior and junior, and the Ritchie family, endeavoured vainly to hear the result of the race by -a short wave radio, but the news eventually reached them by cable. The £IO,OOO prize will Be increased by about.£looo through the exchange.
