PILLAGING FROM TRAINS
NEARLY £l',ooo A YEAR Losses suffered -by the New South Wales railways as the result of pillaging from goods trains total nearly £IO,OOO a year, according to Inspector iWataon, of the Railway Department, who gave evidence iu a court ca s e the other day. A young mechanic appealed to Judge Armstrong against a sentence of three months’ imprisonment, which appellant pleaded was too severe, 'and which was imposed upon him by . the magistrate, on a . charge of., stealing five pairs of rubber boots’ and a quantity of. calico valued at £9 15*, the -property of the Transport Commissioner*, His Honour decided, as appelant had no prior convictions, to- suspend the sentence upon him finding a surety for payment of £9 15s to the Railway Department, "• / SSSBSBSSSSS^Bt
