Since the opening of the Grey Power Board’s hydro plant at Kaimata on September. 21st., it has been • stated that the plant h'as not been operating entirely satisfactory. It is , understood that the steam plant at Dobson is being used to carry half the load. Mr Vickerman', of Messrs Vickerman and Lancaster, consulting engineers, Wellington, made an inspection* His opinion is that the surge chamber is the cause of the trouble. In an endeavour to overcome. this, a hole is to be cut in the surge tank ,to give an outlet for the overflow of the surge, which is to be carried away in >a timber flume. The cost is estimated at £3OO. Apparently the surge is not dealt with by the governors, as was anticipated by the engineers. . The cutting of a hole is expected efficiently to decrease the down surge 'and cut off the upward surge, making the plant absolutely efficient. Mr Vickerman stated 1 at a meeting of the Power Board that it would he possible to avoid my surge if the tank were made larger, but to increase-the capacity I would, cost £300.), He favoured .cutting a hole in the present tank rather than increasing, the size of the tank. The chairman pointed out that the i-epairs would take feix weeks. Tho Board would lose at the rate of £l5O a. week, making £9OO, which, with the cost of alterations; brought the minimum cost to £I2OO. Mr .Vickerman was authorised to proceed with the work. • -
