One of the two Europeans kidnapped near Neuchwang by Manchurian bandits, Mrs Pawley, writihg to her fathfer ■ on October Bth., says that the bandits absolutely refuse to reduce tlie fan* som from a million dollars. She adds: “It is pretty well Hell here! We have received the parcels. Everything U.K.! Bless you all for tlie lice powder. The lice are pretty bad, but they have not reached my chin yet. The next time that messengers come they must bring thirty thousand dollars and two hundred ounces of opium, or else, good-bye to our ears! The bandit chief is fed up with us. Trusting you implicitly. Please help us! Keeping our tails up!” Tlie other captive, Corkran, adds a postscript: “Bung Ho!”
