GOLD-MINING

RUSH IN AUSTRALIA MANY EN tfOUTE. (Australian Press Association ) DARWIN, October 10. Reports indicate there is in progress a big rush to the Granites goldfield before the wet weather closes up the tracks. Men are reaching Alice Springs by various means, including aeroplanes, but those machines cannot land at the Granites, so that the gold seekers have to use trucks, or camels, or have to walk to the field. On the field there' is only one small store, and only one well, producing a scanty supply of water. The heat, Hies and dust render stringent health conditions necessary. The aboriginals in the neighbourhood are said to be acting in a menacing manner. TE AROHA REVIVAL, MINES DEPARTMENT PROMISE. TE AROHA, October 10 Mr A. H. Kimball, Under-secretary of the Mines Department, accompanied by several local departmental officers, conferred to-day with a large number of prospectors and others interested in gold mining, in the To AroTia hills. The conference was for the purpose of clearing up a misunderstanding with regard to the Department’s attitude towards the effort to’bring about a revival of gold mining in the district. Mr Kimball undertook to have an investigation made with a view to employing, if warranted, 30 or 40 men and he outlined recommendations that he was prepared to make which was the measure of assistance required. Mr J. A. Smith, Mining Supervisor, said that there was a promising area on the west side'of the mountain, but titles were held for the best of them.
