NEW EDITOR OF CHRISTCHURCH “PRESS.” MR FREETH’S SYDNEY ADIEU. (Australian Press Association.) ■SYDNEY, October 10. Mr Hugo Freeth was farewelled today by the “Sydney Morning Herald” staffs on his leaving to assume the editorship of “The Press,” Christdhurch. Mr Brinsden Fletcher (Editor of the ■Herald) eulogised Mr Freeth’s fine work and manly character among his colleagues. H© said that, while regretting his departure, all felt they should share in congratulations that their guest wa© going to edit a paper which had played an important part in New Zealand’s development. It recalled the day-s of Samuel Butler and the writing of “Erehwon,” ,Mr Freeth should be able to hold high the ideals of journalism, in which he had been trained partly in his home land, but during the past d©cade on the “Herald.” , ' 1 Mr -Stuart, Assistant Manager, on behalf of the proprietors, added congratulations and regret at the loss of a fine colleague, which wag countered by 1 the knowledge that he was goingto an important position. He would undoubtedly uphold the high traditions •of journalism which he had imbibed during his stay 6n the “Herald.” He had also been prominent in various social activities connected • with the 1 paper, and would be missed by every department. Presentations to the guest included a painting of Sydney Harbour and library fittings of Australian wood. Mr Freeth, replying, said (he was ‘overwhelmed 'by their eulogies, but would always recall -his association with the “Herald” as one’ whereby his training had greatly benefited. He felt that what he had learned’ hare would be useful in the work before him. Various departments had already farewelled Mr Freeth at a social whereat presentations ware made.
