A TRAGEDY
MISS CHAPPELL DIES. MACFARLANE’S HISTORY. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, October 6. Miss Emily Chappell received terrible head injuries, and she died in the hospital this evening. The condition of MacFurlane tonight is grave. Miss Chappell was aged forty-four. Her parents live at Grey Lynn, and her mother is at present seriously ill. MaeFarlane has lived in Mount Albert for about eight years. He is a son of an old Scottish settler, who married a Maori Princess, Otihia, at Kawhai, in th e pioneering days. Formerly lie was a large land-holder .and farmer in the Wairarapa) district, and after his retirement, retained his farming' interests there and in North Auckland. He is fa keen gardener and frequently competed at exhibitions. Ho is also a keen student of politics, and during his retirement, wrote extensively on the subject. About a week ago. he ordered Miss Chappell to burn all his writings and papers. Ho is unmarried.
