PECULIAR AFFAIR
MAN CUTS THROAT ATTACK WITH TOMAHAWK. (Per Press Association — Copyright ) AUCKLAND, October 6. George Macfarlane, aged 80, and Miss Emily Chattel 1, about 45,. were admitted to the Auckland Hospital this morning, seriously injured. Macfarlane, who is a bachelor, lives at Mount Albert, and he recently suffered an attack of rheumatic fever. He has been under the care of a trained nurse, day and night, for over a fortnight. This morning, when the day nurse was conferring with the night nurse in another room, they heard screams., They rushed in and it is alleged that they found Macfarlane attacking his housekeeper with a tomahawk. One nurse wrested it from him and with the assistance of a neighbour, pushed Macfarlane into another room. The neighbour then went for a doctor, and on returning found Macfarlane with his throat cut.
It iis believed that he had meanwhile secured a razor from a bathroom. Both were then taken to the hospital am' , their condition is grave. Macfarlane has been in Auckland for nine years., * It is undersood he was formerly a native interpreter at Greytown,
