SLATIN PASHA
AN AMAZING CAREER. HIS WORK IN THE SUDAN. (Australian Press Association.) RUGBY, October 4. The late B/.ron Rudolph Von Slatin Pasha, formerly British Inspector General in the Sudan, died at' Vienna to-, day at the age of 75 years. He - had an amazing career. He was an Austrian by birth. He entered the service of the British in the Sudan, and with his exceptional knowledge of native life, lie played a great part in consoldating British rule in the Sudan, ■when it was troubled by the religious fanaticism of Alahcli. He underwent great sufferings during twelve years he spent in captivity, and on one occasion the head of his friend, General Gordon, was brought to his tent and thrown at his feet. After escaping, he joined, Lord Kitchener, and was made Inspector General until the outbreak of the war. . Although lie was offered British nationality, Baron Slatin Paslm returned to Vienna. He there joined the Austrian Red Cross. He. visited England this year, and lie received an' invitation from the King to luiifboon at Buckingham Palace. aaM— wmmmmmu hit ■ ni
