FOOTBALL BENEFIT
RUGBY UNION ACTION. 1 . LEAGUE TEAMS. (Per Press Association — Copyright.} WELLINGTON, October 3. When the teams for the Rugby League Smith Family benefit match reached the North Park, at Petone, on Saturday, is was found that the goal posts which wore there earlier in the day had been removed. w It transpired that the removal of the posts had been, ordered by the Wellington Rugby Union. This action by the Union gave rise, to not a little ill-feeling, it being described by Mr Corcoran, the chairman of the Wellington Rugby League, as beiqg most unsportsmanlike. The game, however, proceed after the League officials obtained a set of posts from their own ground. It was gathered on an inquiry from the Rugby. Union officials that posts which were removed were the property of the Union, and that the Union’s lease pf the ground having terminated, instructions were given to have the posts removed. They were taken .down, but they were re-erected on Saturday morning. Finally they were taken away about 1.30 p.m.. No application for the use of the* posts had been received, nor had the match that day been advertised as being a benefit one.
