The “Sun” learns that de Valera has requested the British Government to confer on sth. October, to discuss the . entire Anglo-Irish deadlock. j It \is believed . Britain has ascer- | tained that de Valera is ready for a considerable compromise, and has accordingly agreed to the summoning of a special Cabinet Committee to confer with him. The Committee includes Mr Baldwin, Lord Inskip and Mr Thomas. It is understood that Ireland’s increasing plight has. influenced de Valera. 7 Britain maintains her previous attitude, and is ready for a reasonable settlement, not violating her principles. GOVERNOR RESIGNS. CAUSES' CONSTERNATION. (Received thi* dav at 9.0 D.m.l LONDON, 'October 3. Mr ■ 'McNeil’s retirement has caused consternation in constitutional circles in Dublin. Mr Cosgrave .in the paper “Leader’ ■says: “De Valera has . taken three months to remov 6 Mr McNeil which is in accordance with the treaty, although perhaps he does not realise it. Surely de Valera within three months will found a successor -to submit to his. Majesty, if he does not provide success, or he will be ignoring the constitution, as the Judge’s Commission does not accord with the treaty thereafter. The next step is the declaration or a republic. ,It is stated Mr O’Kelly, when he discussed with Mr Thomas at Ottawa, the renewal of negotiations on land ■ annuities, insisted that a preliminary condition was the removal of Mr McNeill. Government circles are of the opinion .tliat de Valera may appoint himself Governor-General, adding that the. Free State at present does not intend to leave the Commonwealth.
