AUCKLAND CONTESTS BOXED GETS CONCUSSION. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, October 3. The brightest) boxing witnessed in Auckland for years was staged at the Town Hall to-night, when two professional contests were held. An unfortunate occurrence in connection with the evening’s programme Was the admission to the Hospital of Harry Johns, after his being knocked out by Archie Hughes, in their match fm- the light-w’eight chamionship of Ne\v Zealand. ■ 5
In the other professional contest, a light-heavyweight one, Bill Sullivan, of Hastings, knocked out Petty Officer Arthur Firth, of H.M.S. Dunedin, in the fifth round. Sullivan weighed 12st 31b, and Firth scaled half a pound more. Sullivan had all the better of the contest, using a solid right cross, with telling-effect. Firth made a game stand, but he. was unable to weather the battling of blows rained on him in the fifth round.
In the title bout, Hughes fought as ho never founght before in Auckland, r.nd Johns won only three or four rounds. Johns took great punishment in the foui’teonth round before going to the canvas. JOHNS IN BAD WAY. AUCKLAND, October 3 There was an unfortunate ending to the professional boxing contest for the light-weight championship of New Zealand, staged at the Town Hall, between Harry Johns (holder of the title) and Archie Hughes. After being knocked out in the fourteenth round, Johns was unable to make recovery and was taken to the Auckland Hospital suffering from concussion. His conditions is reported to be serious. Harry Johns, who was knocked out in the fourteenth round of a contest with Archie Hughes, the New Zealand light-weight champion, last night, and who was taken to the hospital suffering from concussion, died at seven o’clock this morning. The deceased was seen in th e boxing ring at Hokitika and Greymouth some months ago when* he defeated Johnnie both at Greymouth and Hok'-tika. A DRAWN BOUT. At the stadium last night the twelve round bout, Clyde Chastain 12.12 and Adolf Hintz 13.6, Amerio'lns, return bout, ended in a draw* after a strenuous fight. Hintz had a powerful right in the chinches and was very light on feet.
