RAN INTO SUP
-K-, ACCIDENT TO EXPRESS. AUCKLAND, September 27. An express, which left Auckland this Jnorning for Opua, ran into a slip on ,the line at 1.45 this afternoon about mile north of Tauraroa, which is 16 miles south of Whrngarei. Fortunately the train was proceeding slowly and little damage resulted. The slip, which jwas about' 6ft. high and about the Bame width, right across the line round a bend.
The first indication passengers had of the accident . .was-a severe bump, (which threw them forward practically tout of the seats.' • T[h%ngine ploughed [through? Wie slip. < 'Vithout j leaving the rails. The force of the impact threw [thick clay and mud over the top of the ieiigine, the front of which v was a mass of mud. The right side of the six Carriages comprising the train were towered in mud after passage througn [the slip and the wheels were caked .with clay. A atop of twenty minutes was made ffco pnable an examination ,of the engine jh, be made and it was found that no damage had resulted. The cowcatcher of .the engine had to be freed (of ' a large quantity of mud before the .train proceeded northward, showing plainly signs of the mishap; ' The Opua-Auckland express passed the- spot about an hour previously and ’it is thought v the vibration of. this jtrain may have been the cause of the • flip. -v I
