DEBATE CONTINUED FIRST DIVISIONS. (Per Press Association Copyright.) WELLINGTON, September 30. In the Legislative Council yesterday, the Religious 'lnstruction in Schools (Enabling Bill {Sir J. Alien) was introduced and read a fifet" time. The Address-in-Reply"' debate was continued and adjourned. In t'he House of Representatives the Silver and Copper Coinage Bill (Mr Wilkinson) . was introduced and read a first time. Speaking to the Addregs-in-Reply debate, Mr Rushworth (Bay of Islands) expressed the opinion that the Leader of the amendment did not go sufficiently far in some inspects and went too far in other respects. He moved a further amendment seeking to strike out th e reasons for no-confidence as outlined by Mr Holland and to substitute the following reasons.— “They have taken no steps to adjust the monetary system to meet the great fall 111 overseas values of primary products and all investment values in the Dominion, thereby causing widespread unemployrfight, the (elimination of equities, dire distress, destitution’ and despair in this land in an age of plenty and that in the opinion of this House there should be an immediate, full and open inquiry by a select committee of the 'House into the base and don s t‘ltution of the present money system and possible alternatives thereto, with a view to the discovery and adoption of a system calculated to meet the legitimate requirements of industries, trades and commerce of the Dominion of those who are at present unemployed, of the rising generation and of all efforts to. meet the Dominion’s national liabilities. . ' , , 1 The 1 first section of Mr Rushworth’s amendment (to strike out the reasons for no confidence as set out by the Leader of th e Opposition), was carried by 32 to 21, only Labour members voting for the retention of these reasons.

The latter section of Mr Rush worth’s amendment'{seeking to add the reasons as set out by himself), was defeated by 29 to 25. Thoge voting in favour being Labour members and Messrs Atmore. Black, Rushworth, Tiriakate and Wilkinson.

The debate was then continued on the amendment in reduced form namely “That we deem it our duty to represent to your Excellency that your Excellency’s ladvioers do dot possess the confidence of this House.” • The debate- was adjourned- and the House rose at 11.30 p.tti.
