RANSOM RAISED

BY MANCHURIAN KIDNAPPERS (United Press Association— Jly Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) CHANGHAI, September 29. Bandits are making more extravagant demands for the release of Mrs Muriel Pawley and Charles Corkran, thus raising the ransom from seven thousand dollars ,to one million dol- j lars, in addition to fantastic demands in regard to trinkets and munitions. Hopes for their rescue are now fading as the authorities appear helpless to organise an expedition without endan- -- gering the lives of file captives. Messengers from the bandits* lair report jri seeing the couple, but they were not permitted to hold any conversation. They also brought two letters, one from the bandit chief, and other from Mrs Pawley. The/ contents of the latter have not been divulged. The bandits threaten that unless the money is paid in a few days, the ears of the captives will be sent as a reminder of their intention to kill the victims.
