A remarkably large crowd assembled on the banks of the Avon last evening for the “Venetian Night” in connection with the come-to-Christchiircn festivities. It is probable that the city has never before been given so’ striking a lesson in the potentialities of the river as a source of public entertainment. , f The cr-owd,' - estimated at 45,000, was packed so close that thousands never got a glimpse of the river where decorated boats and outboard motors provided a lively entertainment, variety by a fire brigade display, a torchlight procession, and a- flight overhead of an .illuminated aeroplane. The Venetian Night will be repeated on Saturday.
