NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S BOUTS. (Pet Press Association — Copyright J NEW PLYMOUTH, September 28. To-day’s heavy programme at the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Championships commenced this afternoon, when twelve matches were disposed oi, and was continued to-night. Each session attracted a large attendance. The boxing has been sound on the whole, but |not (brilliant, defence, an most cases, having received mor e attention than attack.
A bright spot in last night’s programme was the meeting of C. Raynor (Marlborough) and C. Buckley (Otago) in the featherweights. In th’’s brilliant bout Buckley- gradually wore his opponent down. W. Purdie, of -Auckland, and O’Donoghue, of Wellington, also gave a skilful display of defensive tactics. Purdie prevailed in all his bouts, but on.- went (h e full distance. J. Franklyn, a hard-hitting Gisborne featherweight, knocked out T. Whit--naugh '(Wanganui) in the first round. P. N.Z. ASSOCIATION MEETS. SEVERAL REMITS DEALT WITH. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 28. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Association, ‘Mr J. Garcia ; of Taranaki, presided ovex thirty delegates. In his annual review, th e- president remarked on the decline in professional boxing, owing to the depression There was a Southland remit that the Australasian championships should be fostered, and that th e funds which were set aside for .the Olympic Games should he devoted to that purpose. This was amended, after discussion, to read that an endeavour should be made to re-introduce the contests between New Zealand and Australian champions. As amended the remit was carried.
Consideration of the question o f whether New Zealand boxers should be sent to the Olympic Games was deferred for twelve months. A (remit to include a junior welterweight class was 10-t. There was a Whangarei proposal to give additional assistance to the smaller associations instead of sending teams to the Olympic Games. This also was lost. It was suggested that the smaller Associations could do a great deal nice for themselves. The confere ice rejected a proposal for the examination of the ’efnv.es and judges taking part in any Association bouts.
