Members of the Westland Racing Club are reminded of the annual meeting which takes place at the Club roam to-morrow evening at 8.30 o’clock. Messrs J. Wilton, J. Jones, L. Hogarth, G. Liikey (Greymouth) J, F. McMahon, G. Lockington, and W. Lockington (Reefton) left yesterday for Waimate, to compete in the Wai-mate-Christchurch cycle road race on Saturday.

A meeting of miners interested in the Jubilee Water Race Scheme will be held this evening at 7.30 o’clock in the Woodstock school room to consider the suggested arrangements made with thie Unemployment Committee and the Hokitika Prospecting Association.—Advt.

’There was n good attendance at the .Soldiers’ Hall .last evening when a successful dance was held by St Mary’s parish'; Excellent arrangements made far the complete success of thp evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. At Greymouth following a meeting of unemployed 'workers, it wag decided to 'fcake a ballot as to whether they would accept the new 'scheme of employment offered by the Unemployment Board or strike. It was decided that a bare majority should rule. At Blackball the previous day the unemployed there voted for a continuance of worK by 68 .to 37. At Hokitika a vote is being taken on the same proposal, but the result has not been made avallab l ®.

Arrangements have been completed for an excursion train to Christchurch on Saturday next. The train will leave Hokitika at 4.30 a.m. and Greymouth 5.45 a.m., and will leave Christchurch to return at 10.45 p.m., ..thus giving West Coast football fans desirious of yis'iting Christchurch during “Come to Christchurch Week” an excellent opportunity to spend the afternoon and evening in the City ol the Plains.

A tragedy, occurred at ‘the Boatman’s Coal Mine, at Capleston, nine miles from Reefton yesterday, at 3.30 p.m., when a well-known miner, Mr Carl August (Gus) Svenson, was killed instantaneously by a fall of coal, The deceased who was '55 years of age, had resided in the district for many ypars, and was widely esteemed The mine in which Mr .Svenson was working is owned by Messrs A, Olipha.u't and J. Wright, being a branch of Archer and Coy’s mine. The late Mr Svenson is survived by his daughter, Mrs Frank Newcombe, of Reefton.
