During the: year ended June 30, 1932, only 35,576 immigrants were admitted, -while 103,295. alien residents left with tlhe expressed intention of making their home s l-n other couritrieis. * In the same period 19,426 aliens were formally deported, 2637 who had bejeonie destitute© iwi.thiin thi-ee years of arrival being ireturned to their native countries by the Government, Ou account of a close scrutiny of qualifications, 10,750 aliens, who were held and found to be subject to deportation, were permitted to depart; at thoir own expense without formal action beingtaken. . This marked yariati-bn' in the t'de; Of immigration in the ■ United States is due to the decrease in admissions ordered’ by President -Hoover, and to the increased' exercise of deportation authority by the Labour Department.
