SIZE OF NETS
REGULATIONS POSTPONED. INTERESTS OF FISHERMEN. WELLINGTON. September 26. 1 The Minister of Marine (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) decided to-day to delay the operation of the new regulations controlling the size of nets permitted to be used for seine fishing. The new regulations insisted that a net with a four-inch mesh should be used, while the existing regulations allow nets with a 2\ inch mesh to be used. Fishermen throughout New Zealand were likely to incur serious losses if the new regulations were enforced, said Mr J. Hargest, who took the subject .up with the Minister. Merchants also would suffer, because they had considerable stocks of 21 inch nets on hand and these would be useless when the new regulations were brought into force. Many of the fishermen purchased their nets on time payment and, if they Were not allowed to use them, they wotild never be able to pay for them. In view of the representations made, the Minister agreed to postpone the operation of the regulations for a year, when the whole question will again be given consideration.
