Wakened in the early hours by his Alsatian dog barking and knocking against the window, A. Birkett, land agent of Eastborne, found his house, which is situated on the Main Road, was on fire. The house and contents were completely destroyed.Eirkett made a quick escape from the burning building, and was unable to save anything. He threw a pair of shoes out of the bedroom window,'but these later were burned on the ground outside.

FOUR BURGLARIES

CHRISTCHURCH, September 26,

Two burglaries ocuerred in the city on Friday night and two more on Saturday. The shop of Mr Robert Macfarlane, in Birdwood Avenue, Fisherian, was entered by a back window on Friday and butter, chocolate and honey to the value of -30 s wlas stolen. A bang 1 , 9i worth 30s was stolen from the home of Mr E. L. Beale, Muchworth (Street, on the same evening. On Saturday afternoon, Mr W. Lee’s house in Mackworth Street was broken into, but nothing has yet been missed. On 'the same«sgßt a quantity, of men’s clothing ancl: a. gold watehchain were stolen from the home of Mr?| J. C.
