H Hall, intimated that Mr Speaker wjv unavoidably absent, thereupon tb' Deputy-Speaker, Mr S- C. Smith, lef his seat , and took the Chair, x af which were recited and the. sitting continue as usual. While Mi Speaker is absent there tan be m ceremonial .entry preceded by the Ser- j geant-at-Arms, thus when the House met yesterday a further intimation w e iveii by the Clerk that Mr Speaker was absent. His deputy then took the Chair and the mace was placec on the table. It so happened tha' Lieutenant Colonel S. G. Sandle began his duties as Sergeant-wt-Arms on Thursday, and owing to Mr Speaker’s absence lie had to adapt himself to a varied set of circumstances which on past experience might not occur again for many years.
