SCIENTISTS IMPRESSED BY DEMONSTRATION. , LONDON, September 4. 'Scientists attending the British Science Congress broke into cheers when, sitting in a darkened schoolroom at York, they suddenly saw a message of greeting from Chelmsford spell itself out on the screen. It was a demonstration of Signor Marconi’s nbw television typo machine, says thfe “News-Cliromefe,” which cables messages typewritten in London to be load immediately on a screen thousands of miles away. Already, according to tb» newspaper, messages televised. from Chelmsford have been read with completely accuracy in Sydney. The invention is the outcome of Signor Marconi’s instruction to his engineers, Messrs H. M. Dowsett and D. L. Plaistowe, to concentrate upon tlie commercial! possibilities as distinct from the entertainment side of television.
' -“We hope the invention will he used to supplement the present cable system,” said Mr Plaistowe. He added that an improved method of picture television also had been discovered, {giving •'stronger, dearer, and more detailed pictures, which can he seen in a partly-lighted instead of a dark room.
