SYMPATHY ACKNOWLEDGED.
GEEYiMOUTH, September 20. The mayor, Mr J. W. Greenslade, has received the following telegram from Wairoa, in acknowledgement of a message of sympathy forwarded an Saturday, on behalf of the citizens: “Many thanks for message of sympathy. Prime Minister has promised to open national fund. (Signed) Ifarkor, mayor.”
QUAKE FELT IN VICTORIA. RESIDENTS RECEIVE A FRIGHT. (Received .this day at 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, 'September 21. Residents rushed into the streets in their night attire when an earth tremor shook the town of Benalla about one o'clock yederdav morning. In some homes crockery was broken, and articles were knocked from their shelves. A noise, resembling the report of a gun, was heard. A tremor of a milder nature was also felt at 3 o’clock at Tatung, Devinish and Thoona.
