INDIAN QUESTION
GANDHI IN GOAL ATTITUDE NOW MODIFIED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) CALCUTTA, September 20. Interviewed in gaol yesterday Gandhi revealed a modified attitude on the electorates issues. He practically agreed to consider any alternative proposal which would not provide lor separate electorates for the depressed classes, and he receded from his former firm stand against the reservation of seats in the joint electorates. Gandhi’s new proposals will he placed before the Hindu depressed classes’ leaders at noon to-day. The cordiality with which the problem was discussed at yesterday’s meeting gives the hope of an early settlement.

The Government will allow -him full freedom In gaol for discussions with -Hindus with a view to a settlement of the caste problem. Doctor Moonje, a high-oaste Hindu leader, and Mr Jayakar declare that they are -hopeful of reaching a sett’e-men-t by the week-end.
