A broken arm was sustained by Mr A. L. Dewar, master of the Waita'ha school, afl the result of a fall from his bicycle last week. The accident necessitated treatment ait *he Westland Hospital, but Mr *D'ewar was able to return to the south.
The seven chain of rock drive, which is (being carried out by the Brunner Collieries Ltd., to open up a new area of coal at Taylorville, is nearing completion. On 'Friday lari, the rider seam was hit, 'and according to the log of t,h e bore hole, the main seam of coal will be reached within one month.
In the Canterbury-West Coast district, eight cases of infectious diseases were reported to the Health Department’ during the week ended at noon yesterday* Last week there were twelve cases. The following are the week’s cases:—Canterbury: Septic poisoning 4, tuberculosis 2, scarlet fever 1, West Coast: Tuberculosis 1. There were three deaths from tuberculosis in Canterbury.

The inquest of the lat© Albert Victor Pfaff, who was found dead at Atarau, on Saturday night Was held at the Ahaura Courtroom yest rdav. before Mr James Sneddon, J.P., of Blackball, Acting-Coroner, and a jury of four when :a verdict was returned that the deceased met with his death through the accidental discharge of his rifle when climbing through a fence.

Canon Newton wil'l probably go abroad for at least Kix tmontns.” The older vresidents will recognise their old friend, the Rev. H. E. Newton, who was vicar of Ross land Kanieri from 1901 to 1907. During his, sojourn in Westland he established a large circlfe of friends, and is affectionately remembered by all with whom he came in contact. In addition to his outstanding ability in his profession, Mr Newton gained. prominence in his mountaineering activities in which direction he performed several feats of note in the Alpine country i of this and other districts.
