USE OF WHIP ON RACEHORSE. A French Court was recently arkcb to decide 'wliether a horseman liad thright to use the whip on his mount. J ..e case -arose from the claim for £2OO damages by a gentleman rider aga'nst the racing authorities who fined him 102 -for using his whip. During the trotting race which gave rise to the dispute he struck the horse -he was riding ?evi eral times on the shoulder as the- Winning post was approached, a!r.d' ' hi-s ,uii.se -assured the Court that til's was in accordance with the practice of the nst -riders, 'and that th e plaintiff was only carrying out the instructions of
ku/rtei, who owned the horse. Another eminent Paris barrister, who is an authority on horse-racing law, replied that the horse had been unnecessarily punished -as it had no- chance of S—» and the only -possible excuse 'for using a whip on a racehorse w •- be the probability that the race would thus be won. Th e Court reserved it-s judgment.
