DEMOCRATIC GAINS
... IN .MAINE STATEI ELECTIONS. • . .REVERSING .‘‘.DRY” ATTITUDE. (United Press- Association;— By Electric Telegraphy-Copyright.) ; PORTLAND (Maine), September 13. The elections for the State of Maine i were herd on Monday', in which the ; Governor of the State and three Congressional representatives- wer e se!--ected. The election developed an entirely unexpected measure of Demo‘cratic party strength, with the yet incomplete returns indicating that all . four of the Democratic nominees may ;be elected, although the closeness of i th© votes is now delaying a/decision. As Maine nominally is an overwhel\mingly 'Republican, the strength of the ’ Democrats js interpreted as being a ; favourable indication ot the Democratic iparty’s chances at the general election in November next. From the fact that the Maine State j elections are jh'eld some fiix weeks prior to: the general ©lections, the rei suits are taken as a so-called National barometer.” The Democrats based their campaign in Maine largely on the repeal of the eighteenth amendment, while ithe -Republicans remained either noncommittal or “dry.”
