STATEMENT DENIED
OF LABOUR’S ENDEAVOURS. TO LICENSE BOOKMAKERS (Per Press Association— Copyright.) DUNEDIN,. September 13. A statement was made by Mr Michaels at the annual meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club, that it was common knowledge that every Labour member in Parliament was fighting tooth and nail to have bookmakers licensed.
That statement was given an emphatic denial by Mr Mimro, the Labour members for Dunedin North today. Mr Munro said that he was sure that the Labour Party as a whole did not wish to liicenge bookmakers. It had not discussed either this question, or any amendment of the gaming laws. The statement made by Mr Michaels was probably based on the lact that a private Bill for the licensing of bookmakersi had been introduced by Mr Armstrong, the Labour member for Christclmch East, but, as many of the Labour members were opposed i:o that measure as were in favour of it.
Mr Munro said that he, personally would not vote in favour of it, and he knew that several .other Labour members were as much opposed to it as he was.
