MAIN HIGHWAYS
MOTOR UNION’S REQUEST. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) WELLINGTON, September 13. The diversion of the sum of £500,000 from the Main Highways Fund to the Consolidated Fund, recommended by the Economy Commission last year, is the subject of comment in a letter sent jointly fronq the North Island and 'South Island Motor Unions, to the Prime Minister. . The letter, which sets out the views of motorists in the matter requests: (1) The provision, as first charge on highway funds, of adequate maintenance for highways during the current year; (2) the utilisation of motorists taxation for road construction and maintenance 'exclusively in future years. The letter was tabled at the meeting of the executive committee of the South Island Motor Union last evening, when the action of the president (Mr F. W. Johnston), in signing it, was approved. Mr Johnston remarked that there was a strong suspicion that the Government might takp + hc £500,000 from the highways funds whether or net tl’we was suHcient for adequate maintenance and necessary construction work.
