DANGER OF POLICY

DE VALERA AND FREE STATE

POSSIBLE CLASH WITH CHURCH

LONDON, September 10

Mr' Dennis Gwynn, in an article in the “Nineteenth Century Review,” draws attention to th© dangers of Mr d, e Valera’s economic policy notably the disappearance of important business, the increasing unemployment, leading to inflation and rising prices. Meanwhile, he says, the) Opposition led by Mr Cosgrave, is powerless. The Dail has risen until October, and cannot be summoned unless a majority combine against Mr de Valera, when the menace of the 1.R.A., which is steadily recruiting and re-Urming, and preparinpg secret dumps, woukl immediately materialise. Nevertheless, the ultimate goal of Mr do Valera and the 1.R.A., whose leaders are notoriously in sympathy with Russian Communism, is still unrevealed. A grave problem is whether the extremists will force Mr de. Valera to establish both a republic and a Communist State.

A big question is whether the Roman j Catholic Church will be able to call a halt 'to this. The I.R.A. has not forgotten the Church’s condemnntion of its activities last year. If ,it gains control it may openly challenge the Church. Mr de Valera’s attitude, in this event is uncertain, because 'of his. strict Catholicity.

The time may come when he will have- to choose between his political and religious associations, revealing whether lie is only an Irish Kerensky or a more formidable revolutionary than hitherto has been, disclosed.
