NAPIER HARBOUR
COSTLY SCHEME ENGINEER’S RECOMMENDATION. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) NAPIER, Sep. 12. Very definite conclusions have been reached by the two engineers who recently investigated the harbour position jat the port, of Napier. Mr F. W. Furkert, engineer-in-chief to the PublicWorks Department, ,arid Mr D. Hc)derness, engineer to the Auckland Harbour Boafd, submitted their report to a special meeting of the Napier Harbour Board to-day. Their conclusions amount to a recommendation that the breakwater at the harbour where medium-sized vessels now berth, should be developed, and that the inner harbour now used for accommodation of fishing craft and lighters which transfer cargo between the shore and large overseas vessels anchored in the roadstead, should be abandoned, pointing out that liew factors have been introduced by the earthquake affecting the methods of port development, The engineers! state; "On the question whether tli@ district requires, and will materially benefit from, the construction of new, or restoration of. tho existing, harbour works, our answer is undoubtedly 'yes 1 ' 1 The report avers that a well-equipped deep-water harbour is preferable to the present method of lightering from vessels anchored in the roadstead. The most suitable scheme for harbour development in its completed form as recommended by the engineers- would involve an estimated expenditure of £913,000, but they recommend for the immediate prosecution of a programme involving £375,000 designed to serve the distiict for many years.
