LONDON, September 10,
Discussing the Ottawa Conference and .the mew British tariffs, the Trades Union Conference at Newcaatle-On-Tyne overwhelmingly rejectd a motion referring back to the General ■Council’s report, which refused to express- condemnation of the new tariffs in view of the short period of operation. i -Mr W. L. Citrine (General Secretary) declared that even under Socialism they might find it desirable to regulate fiscal relations.
■ The session Was also notable for a declaration by Mr 0. T. Cramp (industrial general secretary of the Natiorrl Union of Railwaymen), that he believed that within two year*: the present industrial order would disappear. The situation would grow so serious in the coming months, industrially, financially, and politically, that people of this and other countries, either peacefully or otherwise, would insist on a transformation.
A storm of protest has followed a statement attributed to the dominions (Secretary (Mr J. H. Thomas), after a -visit 'to ’Balmoral, that His Majesty the King was satisfied with the Ottawa agreements. , Critics ; of the Ottawa decisions are particularly loud in their claims that •such a statement by the King is unconstitutional.
-Mr E. H. Marsh, private secretary to Mr Thomas, said that he had drawn (Mr Thomas’ 'attention to the reports (and he had denied the remark.
Some newspapers, however, emphasise th e lack of a Dominions Office denial.
• The Lender of the Parliamentary •Labour (Party (Mr Georue Lansbury) sovs that, it is unconstitutional for the King’s opinion on a controversial political issue to he made pub ic. The Liberal Leader (Mr Lloyd George) said: I can hardly believe that the report i« accurate, because it is such 'am outrage on a constitutional procedure. iV
