Edgar Hales, aged 35, an engraver, pleaded guilty to breaking the window of a leading jeweller in Pitt Street, Sydney, on August 31.st, and stealing £715 worth of diamond rings. (Hales was committed fo,r trial. He- said that lie came to Australia from England, and later came back from New Zealand. Being constantly unemployed', he broke the window in order it.o be deported. Un August 31st, Hales, after breaking it/he window, seized a tray of rliaimO'Tid rings, and rushed across the street with the tray, but he was impeded by the heavy traffic. A postal detective happened to be nearby. Ho gave chase and caught the man, who, during -a struggle, dropped the tray, and the rings were scattered everywhere. Obliging pedestrians, gathered the rings for the shopkeeper, who however, eventually discovered that many -rings were missing.
