Louis John .-Verry, 51 years of age, 'formerly clerk and' trbasureif to the Rodney County Cbupcil ' was' 'to-iday •committed for sentence on charges of (stealing £304 of the County funds. In a statetnent to the- police he said •that ho got into debt because of the islump while running .a land agency in Wanganui. - When -he was appointed County Clerk His creditors began to press him and 1 he knew, that-'he should have filed a bankruptcy petition, blit: as h«: was --iny«y;jpublkr position he4struggled against' .publicity.
To satisfy the judgments against; him in Wanganui he allowed fresh accounts to mount up and about two years ago began to use small sums; from the County cash.
j . The Magistrate granted a request for the renewal of bail.
