.PHELPS DEFEATS GOODSELL, STERN RACE AT LOS ANGELES. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraphy-Copyright.) LOS ANGELES, Sep. 5Goodsell pulled into the lead over the first thousand metres, and at the end of that distance, he had put a length of open water between, him and Phelps., At the fifteen hundred metres mark Goodsell was fourilengths to the good, and he negotiated the.turn with a six seconds margin over Phelps. .
' Phelps quickened his stroke as they headed for home, and with one thousand metres to go, Phelps had diuwn even with the former ohampion. Five hundred metres from the finish, Phelps took a half-length lead, increasing his rate of striking to twenty-eight strokes to the minute.
Goodsell faded towards the finish, but he drew up from being two and a half lengths behind, and was within one length of Phelps when the line was crossed. His time was 17 minutes 10 seconds.
“Tile better man won,” said Goodsell.
Phelps said that it was a hard race from the' start.
Only two thousand persons witnessed the race.' Both men were in tip-top condition, after two-months’ training here.
