BARGAINING NEEDED
“N.Z. INDUSTRY’S SALVATION.”
EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS,
The salvation o'? industry in New Zealand lies in collective bargaining between the employers and workers, states the “N,Z, National Review.” If the - workers are wise they will meet the employers in a reasonable spirit, even if they have, in the meantime, to forego some of the advantages they were able to secure in more prosperous times.
Freedom of contract is not in the interests of employer or worker. Under freedom of contract the honest employer has no protection against the unscrupulous employer, and the workers’ only protection is what is vouchsafed him under the pro vis ion,3 of the Shops and Offices Act and the Factories Act. • It must also be remembered that under freedom of contract unionism will be struck a severe blow and many unions will go out of existence. Both employers and workers have a hard row to hoe in overcoming the many obstacles that stand in the way of better timers, but “Ye fire 'full-board-ed men with courage if ye dare but show it, and never has will but found some ways and means to work it out.”
