EXTENSION OF THE CONTRACT
MINISTERS REPLY TO PROTEST.

AUCKLAND, September 5
Hon. R; Masters, replying to the school committees’ deputation, which protested'against his extension of the school text book contract, said that the objections to the extension Avere confined to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch- He said that .a reduction in price was brought about through negotiations undertaken by him. Not a complaint had been received by tlie department of deterioration in the quality of the books. He said that there was ‘nothing un-usual-in having the same set of text books for eight of tea years. There was no country in the tvorld where the Department of Education held the copyright of their text books. He said' that the expenditure commission had recommended a 25 per cent, reduction in the price, and an extension of the contract for three years, and he stated that the new arrangement was .sound business, and was* advantageous to the public and the parents.
